DAVE HILLYARD & THE ROCKSTEADY 7

The Rocksteady 7 is an influential American ska and jazz band from NYC. Since the early '90s the group has consisted of tenor saxophonist and band leader David Hillyard as well as percussionist Larry McDonald. In live performances, they are supported by a rotating cast of musicians, including drummer Eddie Ocampo and Dave Wake on keys among others. Given reggae's globally reaching influence, the Rocksteady 7 holds true to the genre's roots and the self-described "Jamaican Jazz" sound combines ska, rocksteady and reggae with extended jazz improvisation, intricate melodies, and complex harmonies. The group incorporates many diverse elements of world music with rocksteady rhythms, including ska, jazz, calypso, as well as early African and American jazz influences.

HOWARDIAN
999999999 • THE MARTYKINGS • HALF HUMAN

RE-ANIMADORES (Puerto Rico)
RIP KIDS (Spain) • LOS PEGOTES (Spain)
THE NEIGHBORS (Brooklyn)

With an inherent distaste for pretty much everything, Re-Animadores strip power-pop of its sheen to expose a cynical side of rock'n'roll. The Puerto Rican outfit is wary of the tropical motif; rather than squint at the sun, these guys give it the side-eye. The twangy glee in frontman Ahmed Abizu's riffs is lobotomized by his decidedly flippant vocal tone, while rhythm guitarist Giancarlo Cervoni (Davila 666) gives the four-piece the unchecked punk grit they need to trudge on.

GUITAR LIGHTNIN' LEE
AND HIS THUNDER BAND
FRIGHT BARKER & SONS • THE SAYLAVEES

Guitar Lightnin' Lee, a multi-talented rhythm&blues purist, has defied all rational logic by assembling his band with a bunch of veteran rock'n'rollers half his age. His talent, lyrics, powerful voice, and boisterous personality match perfectly with his backup band. Thus, creating a supercharged blown out style of New Orleans rock'n'roll and blues. The youthful exuberance from all members, especially Lightnin’, keeps the music exciting and gives it the vibrancy it had in it’s heyday.

Raised in the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans over 60 years ago, Lightnin’ had music all around him. After learning from New Orleans blues great Boogie Bill Webb, Lightnin’ went to Chicago to find his inspiration Jimmy Reed. When Jimmy Reed wasn’t throwing Lightnin’ out of his house and telling Lightnin’ to go back to New Orleans, he was showing Lightnin’ his style of Delta Blues via electrified Chicago. After moving back to New Orleans, Lightnin’ played with and around such New Orleans legends as Earl King, Fats Domino, Ernie K-Doe, Little Freddie King, and scores of other brilliant New Orleans musicians. Lightnin’s ears were wide open to the sound around him and he soaked it up like a sponge. For years he listened, learned, and honed his playing and song writing skills in the best of company.

In 1997, Lightnin’ found a young drummer, Paul Artigues (Die Rotzz). They played together for years working on their sound. With the addition of slideman Ted Mathews and bassist Marvin Hirsch they formed the Thunder Band. Guitar Lightnin’ has released two 7-inch records on die Slaughterhaus Records and a self-released CD.

THE LIZA COLBY SOUND
CRAZY MARYTHE GLASS STATE

Black. White. Rock. Soul. The next siren of popular music has arrived. Hailing from the Lower East Side of NYC, The Liza Colby Sound is all things rock'n'roll. Matched with a trio of seasoned virtuoso's, this is a sound born in the '70s and too infrequently carried by a young woman of today. Liza personifies this baton of a rare tradition when she stands amongst these outstanding men. Her beauty remarkable, her arms outstretched and when her mouth opens, there is a distinct sound. A sound that is the youthful rage and lust of garage-rock, a sound that is the temperance and timeless dignity of soul. A sound that is a refined alloy of all the great artists who’ve proceeded her. A sound that demands to be heard. The Liza Colby Sound.

MIRIAM & NOBODY'S BABIES
THE MOTO-GATORS

Miriam Linna began her music career as the first drummer for the Cramps in 1976 New York. The Sudbury, Ontario, native went on to pound the skins for the Zantees and frat-rock luminaries the A-Bones. Linna is perhaps best known for co-founding the legendary Kicks magazine and Norton Records, both with her husband Billy Miller.

In 2014, Linna teamed up with producer Sam Elwitt to release her first solo album, the wall-of-sound tour de force Nobody's Baby (Norton), which was lauded as the best album of 2014 and reached #1 on the influential WFMU. Linna hit the ground running in 2015 with the smash single "The Hand Don't Fit The Glove," with a new album Down Today to be released on October 2nd.

Miriam Linna backing band (Nobody's Babies) is led by Sam Elwitt, with Bruce Bennett, Justina Davies, Matt Fiveash and David Lindsay.

All The Sense In The World

BLACK HELICOPTER
A BUNCH OF GIRLS • MARTIN BISI • THE JOEYS

Birthed from the smoking embers of two of the more critically acclaimed and adventurous bands out of Boston in the late '80s/early '90s (Green Magnet School and Kudgel), Ecstatic Peace recording artists Black Helicopter are the real deal. A classic sense of rock heaviness and infectious melody in league with Satan. But they are their own thing, deep and distinctive.

ATLANTIC THRILLS
PARTY LIGHTS • BAMBOO KIDS • THIGH HIGHS

"Garage-rock" has been cut up into so many subgenres and had its gene pool polluted to the point where it's difficult to remember what an honest to goodness garage band even sounds like anymore. Let Atlantic Thrills remind you. There are a lot of groups today playing in one corner of the genre, playing the same old song over and over — some do it well, some not. But there aren't many bands that can play across the board, any style — agitated punkers, reverb-drenched wailers, drug-soaked psych-outs, beach party anthems, moody slow burners, twanged-up poppers — the Thrills provide you with all of that, and in spades.

One Last Dance While The World Burns

PETER LANCTOT & THE STRAY DOGS
GALAPAGOS NOW!

Pete Lanctot is a singer songwriter living in Brooklyn, NY. His songs are surreal and mysterious narratives often featuring sordid casts of characters who’s time, locations and origins are vague, and seem equally likely to be found in present day NYC, a Memphis juke joint of the '20s or hitchhiking a depression-era plains state highway. Musically, Pete’s songs carry on the American traditions of blues, folk and country music while avoiding reproduction and derivation, and embrace sonic experimentalism and the avant garde. Traditional blues and ballad forms are bent from their original shapes by untraditional playing techniques, droning accompaniments, and interactive free improvisation within the band. In a live setting, Pete accompanies his singing with a wide array of instruments including guitar, viola, violin, accordion and the haunting sounds of a strohviolin (a bowed string instrument where the sound is produced through a metal gramaphone-like horn). His band features a rotating cast of talented musicians and improvisers. Often utilizing very traditional blues, country and string band instrumentations (upright bass, drums, guitar, horns, banjo and pedal steel), the result is far from a polite Americana sound.

On and off the radar of Brooklyn’s underground since 2007, Galapagos Now! has carved a niche for itself as a group "of truly independent mind, and a totally individual sound," if the hype is to be believed. Galapagos Now! is a power trio that revolves around the collaboration between Joe Dairy and Mark Gurarie. Dairy (aka Jeff Waite), whose eight solo records are a testament to his prolific work as a kind of anti-Americana singer-songwriter, adds a croon or howl to the proceedings, whereas Gurarie sings "ugly," as he likes to put it, while holding down the bass. Elder Merchant, Brooklyn native and former drummer for Gözer, keeps the group in straight time while handling the band’s foreign relations. The band has toured the Midwest and South of the United States, as well as Europe. In August 2013, the tour behind a European release of their Compulsive Behavior EP brought them to the UK, Spain and Germany.

THE MOTO-GATORS • HEAP

New York's The Moto-Gators are a swingin' instrumental combo, playing guitarist Ron Kellum's Stax/Link Wray-inspired tunes and a choice assortment of Moto-Gating covers. The band includes former and current members of the Piggies, the Underthings, the Sea Monkeys, the Dirt Cheap, and Wig!

"Heap bring the best, most shining example of The Replacements inspired rock'n roll that I can recall. Really. There's lots of the rootsy, bar charm that The Plimsouls brought to the party, too (think first Plimsouls album) — as well as the post-'Mats band, Bash And Pop and a bit of Love Nut. Rocking and almost criminally hooky... the thick sound ties in with the tight arrangements to ratchet up the fervour that much more. If Heap doesn't make your soul bubble open with joy, then are you already dead. This is real hook-ridden rock 'n roll that pop lovers are going to dig!" -Not Lame Recordings
