THE ROCKSTEADY 7
Celebrate Rico Rodriguez

The Rocksteady 7 is an influential American ska and jazz band from NYC. Since the early '90s the group has consisted of tenor saxophonist and band leader David Hillyard (The Slackers) as well as percussionist Larry McDonald. In live performances, they are supported by a rotating cast of musicians, including drummer Eddie Ocampo and Dave Wake on keys among others. Given reggae's globally reaching influence, the Rocksteady 7 holds true to the genre's roots and the self-described "Jamaican Jazz" sound combines ska, rocksteady and reggae with extended jazz improvisation, intricate melodies, and complex harmonies. The group incorporates many diverse elements of world music with rocksteady rhythms, including ska, jazz, calypso, as well as early African and American jazz influences.

THE BATTERY ELECTRIC • RUNNY
MEAN SIDERSSWILSON (debut)

Twenty years of total failure, idiocy, and destruction by the greatest rock'n'roll group in the history of music, Runny is the sound of Pat Sajak getting kicked in the nuts, over and over. Raw rocking bullshit and magic sounds. Swilson play occult pub-rock: think Radio Birdman and Dr. Feelgood meets Hawkwind. The band features dicks from former/current asshole bands like Dictators NYC, Bamboo Kids, Shemps, Little Seizures, Mighty High, etc. This is their live debut. The Battery Electric decimate with sound all those who wish to deny the party smoldering within everyone! Their sound evokes a fierce horde of loyal Heathens into most righteous dance hall warfare. Each time TBE step onstage they are gloriously swathed in the power only known to rock warriors equal in ability. They're here to party. Mean Siders is a Brooklyn-based band teetering on the edges of blues and punk rock. Their likes: glitter, sweat, stage dives. Their dislikes: exes, gender roles, the patriarchy.

          DANY LAJ & THE LOOKS
          THE SAYLAVEESTHE SHARP SHADOWS

Songwriter Laj (Lajeunesse), born and bred in Kirkland Lake, a rural gold-mining camp six hours north of Toronto, is no stranger to being a small town kid growing up in a secluded northern town. Having toured the country and playing any stage he can find, Laj is now in the position to work out his own musical vision, and so far the results have been very exciting. Laj's heartfelt songs seamlessly meld together elements of rock, folk, and country, without straying too far from the power-pop roots that give the tunes a certain joie de vivre, with nods to tunesmiths like Nick Lowe and Paul Westerberg. The narrative weaved together by Laj's powerful yet unpretentious lyrics tells the tale of the Northern Ontario kid trying to find his way south, ultimately to Montreal, by way of Sudbury, North Bay, Toronto, and everywhere in between, with stories of finding love, cross-country tours, and broken-down vehicles, but ultimately retaining a strong sense of humour and hope which lies within memorably catchy hooks and intertwining harmonies between Laj and bassist Jeanette Dowling. Dowling and drummer Lewis Handford as The Looks, Laj's crack rhythm section, provide a rock-solid foundation and perfect complement to Laj's quirky pop sensibilities, rendering Dany Laj and the Looks an unstoppable force just waiting to win your heart.

                    THE ROCKSTEADY 7
                    Celebrate Larry McDonald
Plus: DJ 100dBs on the wheels of steel

Yup, it's hard to believe, but Rocksteady 7's own Larry McDonald will be turning 80 this June! Larry has had a long and varied career so far with early gigs with Lennie Hibbert, then Carlos Malcolm's Afro Jamaicans, playing on a slew of classic reggae tracks in late '60s and early '70s, playing with Boris Gardiner Happening, then moving to the states and playing with Taj Mahal, Gil Scott-Heron, and most recently, Lee Scratch Perry. He has played percussion on literally thousands of tracks at this point! Larry is a founding member of the Rocksteady 7 and has been at the core of its sound. This will be a special concert for his birthday; expect special guest musician appearances and renditions of some classic tracks Larry has played on over the years!

100dBs is a producer and DJ living in Brooklyn whose signature style blends performance and selection: astral echo pedal on a wild crate-digger's chase through the genealogy of a tune. He came up listening to Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder, thanks to the bootleg cassettes his mother managed to bring with her from Cold War Romania. An adolescent encounter with a Lee Perry record flipped his whole world and led to formative dub experiments on an old four-track. He got his start spinning hip hop nights on the Lower East Side and has toured the world since. He's rocked parties for burners, breakers, Berlin artists and Brooklyn's reggae revivalists.

"The throwback honkytonk tunes of Ruby Rae [are] darker than your usual singer-songwriter fare, with noir-ish and Southern gothic influenced lyrics." –Washington Post

Ruby Rae’s debut release title Double Feature could easily be mistaken for a night at the local drive-in when rock'n'roll still flirted with its honky-tonk roots. Her songs "It Came from the Swamp" and "Invisible Man" showcase country inflected instrumentation paired with heartfelt and sinister stories of guns, love, and loneliness. Backed by a full band on her second EP The Outskirts, Ruby Rae's explores the outsider element of a small American town.
