THE ROCKSTEADY 7
Celebrate Larry McDonald
Plus: DJ 100dBs on the wheels of steel

Yup, it's hard to believe, but Rocksteady 7's own Larry McDonald will be turning 80 this June! Larry has had a long and varied career so far with early gigs with Lennie Hibbert, then Carlos Malcolm's Afro Jamaicans, playing on a slew of classic reggae tracks in late '60s and early '70s, playing with Boris Gardiner Happening, then moving to the states and playing with Taj Mahal, Gil Scott-Heron, and most recently, Lee Scratch Perry. He has played percussion on literally thousands of tracks at this point! Larry is a founding member of the Rocksteady 7 and has been at the core of its sound. This will be a special concert for his birthday; expect special guest musician appearances and renditions of some classic tracks Larry has played on over the years!

The Rocksteady 7 is an influential American ska and jazz band from NYC. Since the early '90s the group has consisted of tenor saxophonist and band leader David Hillyard (The Slackers) as well as percussionist Larry McDonald. In live performances, they are supported by a rotating cast of musicians, including drummer Eddie Ocampo and Dave Wake on keys among others. Given reggae's globally reaching influence, the Rocksteady 7 holds true to the genre's roots and the self-described "Jamaican Jazz" sound combines ska, rocksteady and reggae with extended jazz improvisation, intricate melodies, and complex harmonies. The group incorporates many diverse elements of world music with rocksteady rhythms, including ska, jazz, calypso, as well as early African and American jazz influences.

100dBs is a producer and DJ living in Brooklyn whose signature style blends performance and selection: astral echo pedal on a wild crate-digger's chase through the genealogy of a tune. He came up listening to Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder, thanks to the bootleg cassettes his mother managed to bring with her from Cold War Romania. An adolescent encounter with a Lee Perry record flipped his whole world and led to formative dub experiments on an old four-track. He got his start spinning hip hop nights on the Lower East Side and has toured the world since. He's rocked parties for burners, breakers, Berlin artists and Brooklyn's reggae revivalists.

THE BRITEMORES
THE PURPLE KNIF • WIRE TROOP

A supergroup nearly 30 years in the making, The Britemores is a collaborative effort featuring long-time Detroit musical allies Johnny Chan (New Dynasty 6/Split Signals), Jeff Meier (Detroit Cobras/ Compulsive Gamblers/Rocket 455/Nathaniel Mayer/Gino Washington), Jerry Barterian (Onset/Hysteric Narcotics) and Will Lorenz (aka "the kid"). Comprised of myriad styles and influences, The Britemores’ music gives a thoughtful, greasy nod to Detroit garage/punk legends through memorable guitar hooks while cleansing their audience’s musical palate with soft-spoken, heartfelt ballads that even their mothers (wouldn't) approve of. The Britemores’ debut album is out soon on Jett Plastic Recordings.

MIGHTY FINE
THE SHARP SHADOWSWOMEN OF THE NIGHT

After touring most of the world with The Afghan Whigs, future Mighty Fine singer Steve Myers returned home only to get shot and left for dead on a rainy New Orleans street. Myers moved to New York City to recover and try to put his past behind him, joining the Dulli lead Twilight Singers occasionally for shows on the East Coast or recording down South. Not until hooking up with fellow New Orleanian Jagon Eldridge in late 2003 did he think about starting a band of his own. The original line-up for Mighty Fine consist of Jagon Eldrige and Richie Pomerantz (Andy G & The Roller Kings), Mitro Valsamis (Trickbabys) and Paul Verciglio. For the last ten years Mighty Fine has rocked all over NY state, sharing the stage with TV On The Radio, Andre Williams, The Dirtbombs, The Slackers, Titus Andronicus, The Gories, Mary Weiss, and The Afghan Whigs. After releasing the album Get Up To Get Down on Drugfront Records in late 2011 (that included guest spots by Greg Dulli and Mick Collins), the band went thru several lineup changes including a UK tour lineup that included Collins on guitar. After taking some time to regroup Mighty Fine is back to what it does best, playing punk-soul all over NY state, now with new members Bradley Dean (The Visitors) on guitar and Mickey Finn (Boss Hog) on keys. "Sweaty rump-shakin' punk-soul" is a great way to describe the band, a combination of a James Brown styled soul review and a sweaty punk rock show. In this band, New York and New Orleans meet at the crossroads and no one moves an inch.

Alive And Kicking

THE ABOVE
QUITTY & THE DON'TSSANCHITA

The Above are a rock'n'roll group hailing from Brooklyn, New York. Some folks might call them a garage band... others might describe their sound as rhythm and blues... but regardless of how they are categorized, it is undeniable that their music compels some serious dancing. With tube amps screamin', drum kits stompin', and vocal harmonies wailin', these ambassadors of freakbeat are making good in the city where rock'n'roll will never die.

(Regrettably, Dany Laj & The Looks have had to cancel their Brooklyn appearance due to reasons beyond their control. They hope to be able to return sometime later this year.)

Fifty Miles From Nowhere

PETE LANCTOT & THE STRAY DOGS
LOVESICK • D.H. HUBER

Frontman and songwriter Pete Lanctot leads his amorphous cast of Stray Dogs with avant garde fiddler, Ginger Dolden. Pete and the Stray Dogs takes form as an acoustic duo, as an electric five piece, and everything in between. Lanctot’s narrative songwriting has been likened to artists such as The Carter Family, Townes Van Zandt and "a backwoods Nick Cave," and is firmly rooted in blues, folk, country, and experimental music, offering pinhole views into the lives of characters that range from real to mythological.

THE ROCKSTEADY 7
Pay tribute to Tommy McCook
Plus: DJ Ursa Major (Legio SPQR)

Hot on the heels of the recent Roland Alphonso tribute night, The Rocksteady 7 return to Hank's for a tribute to the legendary Tommy McCook, a giant of Jamaican jazz. Tommy is most famous for his time with the Skatalites and is one of the inventors of the ska style. He also played with his group the Supersonics at the end of the ska-era through rocksteady and into reggae,  He also played on some crucial Aggrovators tracks in the mid 1970s... Let's just say the man had a a long and varied career! The band will play two sets of Tommy's music; a variety of his tunes that personally effected bandleader Dave Hillyard. You will hear songs both familiar and rare!

The Rocksteady 7 is an influential American ska and jazz band from NYC. Since the early '90s the group has consisted of tenor saxophonist and band leader David Hillyard (of Slackers fame) as well as percussionist Larry McDonald (Afro Jamaicans, Bob Marley, Taj Mahal, Gil-Scott Heron).

Vive La Révolution!

LES SANS CULOTTES
THE POXYLIFTS • BUNNY X

The "seven-headed beast from the hard-scrabble streets of Menilmontant" and "those frilly Parisian underthings," Les Sans Culottes borrowed their name from the ill-clad (i.e., long-trousered) citizen-soldiers of the French Revolution. The band's sound is a melange of Francophone '60s girl group and the Kinks... "We are the masters of the French rock'n'roll; all others are but the slave!"
