Feasting On Famine

STEAK
RAMSON PIER

Steak is founding members Erik Lieblein on rhythm guitar/vocals, Jack Grace on lead guitar/vocals, Stu Damm on drums, and occasionally founding member TJ Thomas on bass with Larry Cook and Daniel Garcia also sharing the bass chair. Their first fans developed from the Boulder, Colorado music scene in 1992 which included bands like The Samples, Big Head Todd and The Monsters Leftover Salmon and many others. The band played a "sarcastic latin/funk with everything including the kitchen sink kinda style" (Colorado Daily) and quickly developed a Colorado/West Coast underground group of followers. The word on their 'silly yet clever in a refreshing manner" (SF Weekly) stage show kept spreading and Steak began traveling California with the magical cult band, The Beat Farmers for a stretch. The road continued with a diverse pedigree of bands that included NRBQ, Uncle Tupelo, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fishbone, The Funky Meters, Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste,  Steak got a tour bus and lived on the road for a few years, relocating to San Francisco and eventually basing themselves from Jack, Erik and Stu's birthplace of New York City. Steak is internationally renowned primarily for it's song, "Big Bear" which is featured in the climax of the Fox Searchlight comedy hit, Super Troopers (along with another Steak track, "Second To The Bottle").

Tears Are Gonna Sting

LATE SLIP
LOVECHILD

One extra cold winter in New York City, Chelsea Nenni (guitar/ vocals) hid in her apartment, wrote a bunch of songs, and decided to move to Los Angeles. Once in LA, she got a job at her fave independent record store, Amoeba Music, and met a musician pal who helped her record the Other Men EP. Other Men got airplay on a couple local radio stations and the band gained traction with live shows all over LA. They even spent a night supporting iconic new wave / post-punk rockers, Missing Persons, at the famed Whisky A Go-Go. Standing on that stage, where both Iggy Pop and Gwen Stefani had once stood, Chelsea knew she was ready to go back to New York City. The winters would be cold, but she’d have Iggy-Gwen stardust to protect her. So, Chelsea moved all her shit back across the country and found a new band within two weeks of being back in town. In their first ever gig together as Late Slip, the band opened for Fred Thomas, James Brown’s bass player in the 1960s. He sprinkled some funky pixie dust on them that night and it’s been magic ever since.

Together Alone

PAINTED DOLL
RIBEYE BROTHERS • HAPPY CHICHESTER

Painted Doll came to life when "a death metal guy and a power-pop guy got hammered together at a Goblin concert in Texas." Soon after, Chris Reifert (Autopsy, Death, Abscess) and Dave Hill (Valley Lodge, Walter Schreifels Band, Cobra Verde) began trying to out-deep cut each other with late '60s/early '70s Dutch and British psych-pop, before Chris suggested the two musicians form a band together inspired by the music they'd been trading.

The Ribeye Brothers were formed by Tim Cronin and Jon Kleiman immediately following The Teapot Dome scandal, but broke up soon afterward when someone pointed out that neither Mr. Cronin or Kleiman had been born yet. The band reformed sometime in the early 1990's to fill a niche in popular music they felt wasn't being adequately addressed, namely, unpopular music.

Happy Chichester is a singer-songwriter,-multi-instrumentalist, and producer from Columbus, OH. An original founding member of Royal Crescent Mob, Howlin' Maggie, and Twilight Singers, he has amassed an impressive discography on a wide range of independent and major labels, including the legendary Sire Records, Columbia, and Elektra.

Change Of Plans

Photo:

The Rocksteady 7 is an influential American ska and jazz band from NYC. Since the early '90s the group has consisted of tenor saxophonist and band leader David Hillyard (The Slackers) as well as percussionist Larry McDonald. In live performances, they are supported by a rotating cast of musicians, including drummer Eddie Ocampo and Dave Wake on keys among others. Given reggae's globally reaching influence, the Rocksteady 7 holds true to the genre's roots and the self-described "Jamaican Jazz" sound combines ska, rocksteady and reggae with extended jazz improvisation, intricate melodies, and complex harmonies. The group incorporates many diverse elements of world music with rocksteady rhythms, including ska, jazz, calypso, as well as early African and American jazz influences.

Machine Gun Eyes

"Blistering old school punk rock outfit The Tracys are as clear an '80s punk revival as it gets." - Michael Haskoor, The Deli Magazine

Raised on '80s punk with a side of maple syrup, Alberta native Dave Klym (The Mike Plume Band, The Populars, Itch) is the driving force behind The Tracys monster hooks and blazing solos. On rhythm guitars, John Payne (Puppetbox) has been known to contribute harmonies as silky as his  well-coiffed hair.  Larry Mancini  holds down the fort on the bass guitar with a little bit of whimsy, and a belly full of pizza. Anchoring this operation is drummer Matt Ernst, whose thunderous beats form the foundation for the group's aggressive style.  With infectious melodies and gallows humor, The Tracys' brand of pop punk holds true to the sensibilities of old-school west coast punk. With the release of their 3rd record, Humdinger, The Tracys continue to hone their signature sound, taking aim at what ails us with a double barreled blast of music and mayhem.
