Faded Memory

RYAN LUCE (RECORD RELEASE SHOW)
LOW ROLLER • DJ HONKY TONK RADIO GIRL

“Sometimes you gotta get lost to be found”

Taking an unexpected trip to LA set the stage for Ryan Luce’s debut EP, California Gold. Driving through Arizona to the city of angels, he encountered the vast plains and mountains of the southwest. Encountering truckers, runaways, and hustlers gave Ryan material to tell stories of life, love, and loss. Taking a songwriting class from Louise Goffin at the legendary Village Studios started the journey to write the title track of two young kids setting out anew, hoping for the best ("California Gold"). Standing at a bus stop in early spring he wrote a song about a couple splitting up with a two step beat ("Loner Tendencies"). From there a showing of the the late '70s flick, The Rose inspired him to write about being a musician and the love, you may have after being out on the road ("Secondhand Rose"). The album opener ("Faded Memory") has been with Ryan the longest, written in the span of 20 minutes, he has continued to sing a song about a father’s dreams dashed and a son that grew into a man.

Over the last year he has been joined on stage by friends, DM Salsberg (keys), Matt Sapp (bass), Omer Ashano (violin), and Waverly Langston (drums), opening for Dan Layus and The Last Bandoleros. Over the course of three winter days Ryan and his band recorded at Grand St. Recording with engineer, Jake Lummus. Along with pedal steel player Ron Raymond, they have crafted songs that stretch out into the vast western sky.

Your Problem Now

SETH KESSEL BAND

Seth Kessel has been playing full-time in New York City and abroad since 2009. Although he has a diverse musical background ranging from punk rock to jazz to fingerpicking blues, his focus lies in early rock'n'roll, classic country, and jump blues. Kessel's richly toned voice, virtuosic guitar playing and powerful songwriting makes him a triple threat. His core band consists of New York's heavy hitters; Larry Cook on upright bass and Stephen Purcell on drums. When playing locally, he often uses special guests on violin, horns, piano, accordion or pedal steel.

This show is part of Dead Flowers Productions new free Happy Hour series.

Rainfall And Laughter

MARCELLUS HALL & THE FOLLOWING GUESTS

RUBY RAE

Marcellus Hall has recorded with the bands Railroad Jerk and White Hassle and has toured the US, Europe, and Japan. He continues to make music under his own name. A solo album, The First Line, was recorded with accompanying musicians and released on Glacial Pace Recordings in 2011. A second solo album, Afterglow, was recorded and released with The Hostages in 2013. Hall now records and performs with The Following Guests (Damon Smith, Mike Shapiro, and others), formerly known as The Hostages).

The ultimate in the burgeoning garage folk art rock literate dance acoustic idiom that is sweeping the city. Hall and his band deliver like no one else. No one even comes fucking close. There is a reason why all of New York is talking about New York’s best kept secret. If it’s great music you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place. You won’t want to miss this!

Last Kind Words

Phil Gammage's style of roots and blues influenced songwriting and music has been compared to everyone from Elvis Presley to Chris Isaak to Scott Walker — or as the Trouser Press once wrote "...underwrought darkside Americana echoing Nick Cave’s fascinations minus the melodrama. Which might well make Gammage this generation’s Hank Williams."  Eight albums, several U.S. and European tours, and numerous songs featured in television shows and commercials have earned Phil a growing following and a steady hum of praise. His most recent recording the 10-song Used Man For Sale is an album of outstanding Gammage penned songs.

Dont Make Me Break You Down

ERIC AMBEL
KASEY ANDERSON • CLIFF WESTFALL

Eric Ambel is a roots-rock renaissance man who has worked as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer with the likes of Nils Lofgren, Mojo Nixon, Freedy Johnston and Mary Lee's Corvette, as well as an original member of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, The Del-Lords and The Yayhoos. Ambel — known to friends, associates and bandmates as Roscoe — is the possessor of an estimable musical resume that’s established his credentials as a deeply committed rocker as well as a witty and thoughtful songwriter. Between his current duties as producer, bandleader, studio proprietor, bar owner, member of uber-bar-band supergroup the Yayhoos and lead guitarist of Steve Earle’s band The Dukes, he’s found time to launch his own label, Lakeside Lounge Records, to redress the longstanding absence of Ambel solo product from the marketplace.

Hold That Tiger

"The throwback honkytonk tunes of Ruby Rae [are] darker than your usual singer-songwriter fare, with noir-ish and Southern gothic influenced lyrics." –Washington Post

Ruby Rae’s debut release title Double Feature could easily be mistaken for a night at the local drive-in when rock'n'roll still flirted with its honky-tonk roots. Her songs "It Came from the Swamp" and "Invisible Man" showcase country inflected instrumentation paired with heartfelt and sinister stories of guns, love, and loneliness. Backed by a full band on her second EP The Outskirts, Ruby Rae's explores the outsider element of a small American town.

One Last Dance While The World Burns

PETER LANCTOT & THE STRAY DOGS
GALAPAGOS NOW!

Pete Lanctot is a singer songwriter living in Brooklyn, NY. His songs are surreal and mysterious narratives often featuring sordid casts of characters who’s time, locations and origins are vague, and seem equally likely to be found in present day NYC, a Memphis juke joint of the '20s or hitchhiking a depression-era plains state highway. Musically, Pete’s songs carry on the American traditions of blues, folk and country music while avoiding reproduction and derivation, and embrace sonic experimentalism and the avant garde. Traditional blues and ballad forms are bent from their original shapes by untraditional playing techniques, droning accompaniments, and interactive free improvisation within the band. In a live setting, Pete accompanies his singing with a wide array of instruments including guitar, viola, violin, accordion and the haunting sounds of a strohviolin (a bowed string instrument where the sound is produced through a metal gramaphone-like horn). His band features a rotating cast of talented musicians and improvisers. Often utilizing very traditional blues, country and string band instrumentations (upright bass, drums, guitar, horns, banjo and pedal steel), the result is far from a polite Americana sound.

On and off the radar of Brooklyn’s underground since 2007, Galapagos Now! has carved a niche for itself as a group "of truly independent mind, and a totally individual sound," if the hype is to be believed. Galapagos Now! is a power trio that revolves around the collaboration between Joe Dairy and Mark Gurarie. Dairy (aka Jeff Waite), whose eight solo records are a testament to his prolific work as a kind of anti-Americana singer-songwriter, adds a croon or howl to the proceedings, whereas Gurarie sings "ugly," as he likes to put it, while holding down the bass. Elder Merchant, Brooklyn native and former drummer for Gözer, keeps the group in straight time while handling the band’s foreign relations. The band has toured the Midwest and South of the United States, as well as Europe. In August 2013, the tour behind a European release of their Compulsive Behavior EP brought them to the UK, Spain and Germany.

You’ve got to revere and respect your roots in order to tread fresh territory. That’s when you can break ground and truly make a difference. The Slim Kings stand at the eye of a perfect storm for bluesy rock'n'roll. Among the New York group’s ranks are two young guns — singer, and rhythm guitarist Michael Sackler-Berner and lead guitarist Henry Geller — along with legendary drummer Liberty DeVitto, who spent over three decades playing on seminal records for, and performing with Billy Joel. Blending elegant song craft, impeccable instrumentation, and a whole lot of soul, this formidable lineup comes to life on its second full-length offering, Dirty Socks and in particular in the live setting.

Ragged And Rowdy

BEN HOPE & THE UPTOWN OUTFIT
PETE LANCTOT & THE STRAY DOGS

Ben Hope & The Uptown Outfit are a country band based in NYC. The group, fronted by Ben Hope (from Broadway's Once) features Miles Aubrey on lead guitar and Andy Galore on bass. These days the drummer spot seems to rotate between several very talented dudes, such as John Rochette and Joe Cogen. There is no better band to drink whisky to, and no better reason to put on your cowboy boots and come out on a New York City night.

Sing Me Back Home

LOWLARK
68CREEP

Lowlark are a rock'n'roll band that aspires to play North American songs with grit, groove, and soul. They think music is a verb, and aim to move on the same vital trajectory as Muddy Waters, Merle Haggard, The Band, Gram Parsons, Springsteen, Whiskeytown, Drive By Truckers, and Ray Wylie Hubbard.

You can call it cosmic Americana or alt-country/soul or funky rock'n'roll, but don’t want to get all caught up with that. Lowlark just want to play music they love and see if we can’t dance down the path of the righteous without falling down too often. The band currently spend their time in the People’s Republic of Brooklyn and the great state of New Jersey.
