(Let's All) Turn On!

HOODOO GURUS
with THE MASTER PLAN and DADDY LONG LEGS

Like most bands, Australia's Hoodoo Gurus were largely the product of their influences; unlike most bands, however, the Hoodoos channeled their inspiration from the vast entirety of the American pop cultural landscape, drawing on such disparate sources as B-movies, bad sitcoms, and junk food — in tandem with the usual suspects like garage-rock, power-pop, and surf — to create a distinctly kitschy and catchy sound. Formed in Sydney in 1981, Le Hoodoo Gurus (as they were originally dubbed) were led by singer/songwriter Dave Faulkner, who along with drummer James Baker previously served as a member of the short-lived Perth punk unit The Victims (best known for the autobiographical single "Television Addict"). Ex-Scientists Rod Radalj and Kimble Rendall rounded out the group's initial lineup, and their unique sound of three guitars and no bass — along with Faulkner's infectious songs — quickly earned them a record deal. After issuing their debut single "Leilani" in 1982, both Radalj and Rendall quit, and were replaced by former Fun Things guitarist Brad Shepherd, and bassist Clyde Bramley.

In 1998, the Gurus announced they were splitting up, and the career-spanning compilation Ampology was issued in 2000. Two years later, Dave Faulkner, Brad Shepherd, and Mark Kingsmill were working together again as members of the garage-influenced The Persian Rugs, and in 2004, after Faulkner had reworked "What's My Scene" from Blow Your Cool as a theme song for an Australian rugby team, the band reunited (with Rick Grossman returning on bass), staging a successful tour down under and releasing a new album, Mach Schau. In 2009 the Hoodoo Gurus inked a deal with Sony Music Australia, resulting in their ninth full-length album, 2010's Purity of Essence and have been touring the world ever since.

[The Master Plan is a NYC punk super-group made up of members of The Fleshtones and The Dictators, while the Andy Shernoff produced Daddy Long Legs is a young, blues-punk band featuring members of The Electric Shadows and the Stalkers.]

Through the mists of time

Australia's Raven Records presents The I.R.S. Years 1980-1985 – It's Super Rock Time, a superb 26-track, 78-minute CD collection from one of America’s original, and longest-running, garage-rock bands, self-proclaimed Living Legends, The Fleshtones. Formed in 1976 in Queens, New York by vocalist Peter Zaremba and guitarist Keith Streng, The Fleshtones combined fuzzed guitar and Farfisa organ with '50s rockabilly and '60s r&b into a potent retro stew they called “Super Rock.” Contemporaries of Suicide and The Cramps on the late-'70s NY scene, the group became a huge influence on early '80s garage-rock revivalists Dream Syndicate, Plimsouls, Hoodoo Gurus, etc. Amazingly, they are still at it today, finally garnering respect for being as raucous as ever. It's Super Rock Time covers their key five year tenure with Miles Copeland’s record label. Culled from their classic albums (Roman Gods, Hexbreaker!, and Speed Connection) and numerous EPs and singles, highlights include the frat-rocking "Girl from Baltimore," the whomping "Screamin' Skull," the moody "Shadow Line," the Standells-like "Stop Fooling Around" and one of their most memorable tunes, a tasty cover of Lee Dorsey’s "Ride Your Pony." Many tracks are appearing on CD for the first time. With superb quality audio, detailed notes and color booklet, this excellent release is a must for fans of irresistible, reverb-drenched garage/r&b.

Super rock'n'soul... Down the East River!

THE FLESHTONES and NOUVELLAS
Rocks Off Concert Cruise aboard the Half Moon!

The Half Moon is a 200-capacity, two-level boat, with a full bar docked at Skyport Marina, at 23rd Street & the East River. The bands play on the upper level, which has a roof, but is open on the sides. There is also a large open deck on the upper level, where smoking is permitted as you enjoy panoramic views of the city and beyond. Departing from 23rd Street and FDR Drive, the Half Moon heads south along the East River and passes underneath the three major bridges (Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn), then cruises through New York harbor to the Statue of Liberty, which it circles for approximately thirty minutes. It then turns around and makes the same trip again in reverse over a three hour period. The experience of watching the bridges pass overhead while a great band is rocking twenty feet away is not to be missed!

American Beat '09

It began with a celebration. Dead Flowers Productions' relationship with The Fleshtones started with the honor of booking the thirty year anniversary show for the celebrated act, whom Peter Buck of R.E.M called "the best live band on earth." From there, several successful shows followed with Dead Flowers showcasing The Fleshtones in varied and creative venues: from co-headlining NYC's second largest street fair to a truly raucous boat cruise down the East River. And from these symbiotic handful, fueled by drive and a shared love of all things rock'n'roll, the decision was made — Dead Flowers Productions would take on the role of booking America's greatest live rock'n'roll band, The Fleshtones.

When The Fleshtones first appeared at CBGBs in 1976 they were a decidedly retro outfit, celebrating the glorious abandon of the '60s garage band explosion. Over the years they've become a tradition unto themselves, incorporating '50s r&b, '60s frat-rock, and '70s disco into a heady mix that can only be described as "super rock." After twenty albums and not a single inactive year, they're still at it, releasing not one, but two albums in 2008. One of the band's greatest strengths is in their ability to avoid sounding like a museum piece, writing songs that could have thrived forty years ago, but which feel right at home in the now!

Dead Flowers got its start as a music-centered online platform for its writers' passions and obsessions in the late '90s. It was a place to read about the classics reconsidered, the obscure brought into the spotlight, the lost re-found, and the so-called marginal made to matter. Those elements animate the new Dead Flowers, an enterprise devoted to managing, booking, and promoting bands and projects that ignite those same passions.

Fresh off the heels of this year's critically adored Take A Good Look and their long overdue biography Sweat: The Story of the Fleshtones, America's Garage Band by Joe Bonomo, Brooklyn's most unsung sons are back with their warped personal take on Christmas music.

From the garage rock gods who brought the world "Super Rock," Stocking Stuffer is the Christmas album for music fans who hate run-of-the mill Christmas music. The Fleshtones just want to rock and they're not about to let peace on earth or good will to men get in the way.

"Hooray for Santa Claus" opens the disc with a speaker busting ode to the guy in the big red suit and "Champagne of Christmas" looks back to The Fleshtones' classic r&b roots while extolling the virtues of more than a little yuletide bubbly. Stocking Stuffer is festive enough to get you in the holiday mood but rocks hard enough to keep the eggnog flowing through mistletoe make-out sessions and drunken sing-a-longs. If Santa is cool enough to leave this little gem in your stocking, this year you'll actually look forward to Christmas music.

Meet The Lost Crusaders

"You seem to have actually come up with something new, not an easy feat these days." -James "The Hound" Marshall

The Lost Crusaders is the outgrowth of New York City garage-rocker, Michael Chandler's appreciation of Southern and urban gospel music and its often hard-edged message of hope and comfort in a turbulent world. Chandler's own musical history began in the early 1980s, with his country-western/folk/comedy duo, Tchang & Chandler at Club 57 on Manhattan's lower east side and with the seminal '60s garage rock band The Outta Place. Tchang & Chandler formed the basis for The Raunch Hands, a rhythm & blues, surf, punk powerhouse which has endured, recorded, and toured for over twenty years and boasts record releases and an ardent fanbase on four continents.

Throughout his musical career, Chandler wondered how to incorporate the great sounds of gospel music -- the very basis of all popular R&B -- into a form that could be appreciated by a secular audience without outright theft (a la Ray Charles), and while bypassing the trite sterility of today's "Christian contemporary" music. The answer was helped along by two things: the declining moral and environmental state of the world, and a show on Ludlow Street in New York City by Chandler's side-project, Chandler & The Chasers alongside Atlanta's Tiger! Tiger!, fronted by Buffi Aguero (SubSonics, Vendettas). The two found an instant collaborative affinity and set the wheels of The Lost Crusaders in motion. With Buffi in place as rhythm guitarist and long-distance motivator, Chandler enlisted the help of recently-transplanted St. Louis native, Brian McBride, the over-the-top bassist and co-frontman of the Queens-based band The Visitors (and current member of the Electric Shadows), to co-write and arrange the material for an LP. Brian's by-rote, fingerpicking style on bass meshes perfectly with the band's rhythm which was provided by the phenomenal drummer, Joey Valentine, formerly of the Star Spangles and, more recently, Brooklyn's Coydogs. With a top-notch rhythm section in place, Chandler and Buffi needed to add some flavor to the mix, and she suggested the talented lead guitarist, Johnny Vignault, with whom she had played in the Vendettas. Also originally from Atlanta, now a New Yorker, Johnny has played and toured with The Woggles and NYC's Brother Reverend. The next necessity was a piano/organ player, and Chandler figured Craigslist was as good a place as any to look; he received this sparse response: "Jerome here. I play keys and organ for Kelly Temple church of God in Christ in Harlem. Born and raised in Savannah, GA, I've been in church all my life and my father was/is my pastor. You know the rest!" Over dinner in Harlem, Chandler brought Jerome Jackson aboard without ever hearing him play.

It had always been Chandler's notion to share the musical spotlight in this project, and he spread around the the lead and back-up vocal duties to others, as well as inviting an array of very talented and established musician friends to participate in the recording of the Lost Crusaders' LP, now named, Have You Heard About The World? Brian sings lead on "Wasted On The Wind," and Buffi has featured backing vocals on "I Don't Ask Why" and "It Don't Worry Me," the latter being the song featured in the closing credits of Robert Altman's Nashville, and written by Keith Carradine. Jon Spencer (Pussy Galore, Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash) sings along with Chandler on "I Wonder What Ever Happened," and plays acoustic guitar on a few songs as well. On the two country numbers, country/folk heroine Laura Cantrell lends her plaintive voice, doing Emmylou Harris/Graham Parsons-style duets with Chandler. Also featured are Keith Streng of The Fleshtones, providing a killer lead guitar track on "There Used To Be A River," and Matt Verta Ray (Speedball Baby, Heavy Trash), on lap steel guitar. Former member of the Fleshtones and Andy G. & The Roller Kings, Steve Greenfield plays alto and baritone saxophone.

Finally, Chandler enlisted experienced producer, Dean Rispler (Little Killers, Candy Snatchers, Bad Wizard, among many others) for production duties, who brought the band to Alap Momin's Dead Verse studios in Union City, NJ. Alap (who is also a member of experimental hip hop group, dälek) engineered the sessions. When everybody converged, Have You Heard About The World? was recorded and mixed in ten days, and in spite of The Lost Crusaders' wealth of talent and experience, the band all feel that the whole is actually far greater than the sum of its parts.

Dave Faulkner's birthday bash

This past Saturday, Dead Flowers was THRILLED to have been able to host and help organize a 50th birthday bash for the legendary Dave Faulkner of the Hoodoo Gurus (not to mention The Victims) at Magnetic Field... Dave is a fantastic, down-to-earth cat, and the party was a real blast with performances by The Brooklyn Atomic (Steve Wynn with Linda Pitmonn, and various Fleshtones and Dictators), The Master Plan, and The Fleshtones, plus The World Famous "Bob", various drag queens, and Phast Phreddie spinning boss tunes all night... Dave even joined the 'Tones on vocals and guitar for their finale, a scorching version of his own "Like Wow-Wipeout!"
