My Friends Are Whores

THE WHORES (record release party)
SWILSON • NO VALENTINEHOT DICE

The Whores (these whores) were birthed in the bars and backrooms of Brooklyn in early 2004. They are the answer to a question nobody asked. They hone their schtick to be purposefully raw, elemental, and available for the right price.

Concrete Jungle

Roddy Radiation, former lead guitarist of the legendary British ska band The Specials, will be playing Hank's Saloon on May 18th. "I'm very much looking forward to singing and playing my Specials hits," said Roddy from his home in England.

The Specials pioneered the ska revivial craze of the late 1970s by combining the danceable ska and rocksteady beat with punk's energy and attitude. Roddy wrote many of The Specials’ classics such as "Concrete Jungle," "Hey Little Rich Girl," and "Rat Race," which helped to create the 2Tone sound. Roddy has also played in rockabilly bands since his youth, such as The Tearjerkers and The Bonediggers. Currently, he leads The Skabilly Rebels, a band that forges a new sound by mixing ska rhythms with rockabilly guitars.

For this show and tour, Roddy will be backed by Baltimore/DC punky-reggae band The Scotch Bonnets (who will also do their own set). Rounding out this special night will be Dead Flowers Productions' very own DJ Mr. Lee spinning boss reggae and punk sounds.

I Can't Quit You

"How do you feel about vintage American punk? I’m talking about the stuff that is angry and fun at the same time. I’m talking about early Black Flag, Circle Jerks, I’m talking about guitars plugged straight into amps with no effects, lots of gang vocals, beats that just keep on beating. Yeah, me too. Rejoice! World War IX is here for you."

Trash Punk. Get drunk. Do you suffer from TMF, Too Much Fun? Rest assured Brooklyn's World War IX understands your plight, and feels your pain! Their songs are hook-riddled cautionary tales that get your fists pounding and your heart pumping. "Why did I drink so many beers?" "What possessed me to pop that pill?" Quality questions for sure, but really the only thing you're going to want to know is what's their next tune going to be, and when are they going on?!

With three full-length albums, countless singles, compilations and American and Euro tours under their collective belt, Sit N' Spin have been praised by the press and gained fans all over the world, including Tokyo's 5678s and BBC Radio's legendary DJ John Peel (R.I.P.). While comparisons have been made to artists such as The Ramones, The Ronettes and Link Wray, Sit n' Spin do what they did best—made music that combined the best of garage-rock and roots-rock with their own personal brand of wit. The band got its start in New Brunswick, NJ where there was a good venue, a good record store and a college radio station to nurse their nascent rock ideas. Crisply melding a sense of fun with focus, they put forth garage-pop with edge and substance, deftly commingling crunch and melody.

Bourbon Express is wife and husband, singer-songwriter Katie Curley and guitarist Brendan Curley, and vocalist Sarah Kinsey. The Daily Country describes their debut studio album as "contemporary yet timeless."

All Shook Up

The Tickled Pinks are a swing vocal trio and band that started as a tribute act dedicated to playing Andrews Sisters arrangements true to their original sound. What started out as three bartending canaries on late night romps evolved into a sophisticated evocation of a time almost forgotten. While the ensemble maintains an authentic quality in it's musicality, the young members bring a fresh energy and witty playfulness to the repertoire. The group also performs original arrangements of popular tunes translated to swing.
