They say with youth comes energy and with age wisdom, but nobody told The Brought Low to slow down and wise up.

Three records in and with countless shows under their belt, this NYC powerhouse power trio has set the benchmark for the sort of classic hard-rock that the mainstream's long forgotten and the underground only claims to represent. You want a cheap, mass produced facsimile, I'm sure some by-the-numbers corporate act is overcharging for their tepid arena-rock. You want generic bar-rock, go to your local club. You want the real deal, go see The Brought Low.

In the words of guitarist/singer Benjamin Howard Smith, the aptly titled Third Record (Small Stone Records) has the band "coming to terms with their punk rock roots" while remaining true to their undisputed and undeniable classic-rock sound.  The end result is an invigorating, unrelenting kick in the ass with hard charging rockers like "Old Century Man" and "Everybody Loves A Whore" having just as much soul as cry-in-your-beer ballads "A Thousand Miles Away" and "Last Man Alive," and grooves as deep as new live favorites "The Kelly Rose" and "Matthew’s Grave."

Recorded fast'n'dirty with producer Andrew Schneider (Pelican, Cave In, Scissorfight), Third Record is the album that finally matches the band's intense live energy. It's a new chapter in The Brought Low's continuing reign as the heavyweight champs of classic hard-rock.

Formed in 1999 by Sweet Diesel's Benjamin Howard Smith and drummer Nick Heller, The Brought Low released their self-titled debut album in 2001 on Tee Pee Records. Several tours and members later the band solidified its line-up with bassist Robert Russell. 2006's Right On Time, their first on Small Stone, was hailed as an instant classic by The Boston Phoenix, Lollipop, Roadburn and Stonerrock among others. The band is renowned for their awesome live show and has shared the stage with such bands as Them Crooked Vultures, The Supersuckers and Nebula.

Australia's Raven Records presents The I.R.S. Years 1980-1985 – It's Super Rock Time, a superb 26-track, 78-minute CD collection from one of America’s original, and longest-running, garage-rock bands, self-proclaimed Living Legends, The Fleshtones. Formed in 1976 in Queens, New York by vocalist Peter Zaremba and guitarist Keith Streng, The Fleshtones combined fuzzed guitar and Farfisa organ with '50s rockabilly and '60s r&b into a potent retro stew they called “Super Rock.” Contemporaries of Suicide and The Cramps on the late-'70s NY scene, the group became a huge influence on early '80s garage-rock revivalists Dream Syndicate, Plimsouls, Hoodoo Gurus, etc. Amazingly, they are still at it today, finally garnering respect for being as raucous as ever. It's Super Rock Time covers their key five year tenure with Miles Copeland’s record label. Culled from their classic albums (Roman Gods, Hexbreaker!, and Speed Connection) and numerous EPs and singles, highlights include the frat-rocking "Girl from Baltimore," the whomping "Screamin' Skull," the moody "Shadow Line," the Standells-like "Stop Fooling Around" and one of their most memorable tunes, a tasty cover of Lee Dorsey’s "Ride Your Pony." Many tracks are appearing on CD for the first time. With superb quality audio, detailed notes and color booklet, this excellent release is a must for fans of irresistible, reverb-drenched garage/r&b.

Ronald Reagan makes a run at a second term as president, the Berlin Wall is still intact, Boy George tops the charts and has yet to spend a day in jail or collecting trash in lower Manhattan, MTV seems to be a fad that might just stick around, cell phones and the internet aren’t much more than space-age rumors alongside jet-packs and time travel. Most of the more dire predictions in George Orwell’s book haven’t come true. Yet.

And the Dream Syndicate releases its second album Medicine Show.

Despite charting on the Billboard list of top LPs and topping the CMJ singles chart for two months, the album is met with mixed reviews in the US where the band’s debut The Days Of Wine And Roses had been a critical sensation. Overseas it was a different story: Medicine Show received the highest accolades across Europe and the UK (the album made the London Guardian's “Top 40 Albums of the First 40 Years of Rock” list in the mid-'90s), sowing the seeds for a career that has been strong for bandleader Steve Wynn to the present day.

Wynn and his band the Miracle 3 will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the release of Medicine Show with two shows in New York City and Los Angeles where they will play the classic album from start to finish for the first time. The Miracle 3 -- Steve’s long-time band of Jason Victor, Dave Decastro and Linda Pitmon -- did similar shows for The Days Of Wine And Roses in 2001.

"Medicine Show is the weirdest, most idiosyncratic, nastiest, funniest and most revealing record the Dream Syndicate ever made," said Wynn in the liner notes from the 1991 reissue. "It’s also my favorite."

Super rock'n'soul... Down the East River!

Rocks Off Concert Cruise aboard the Half Moon!
The Half Moon is a 200-capacity, two-level boat, with a full bar docked at Skyport Marina, at 23rd Street & the East River. The bands play on the upper level, which has a roof, but is open on the sides. There is also a large open deck on the upper level, where smoking is permitted as you enjoy panoramic views of the city and beyond. Departing from 23rd Street and FDR Drive, the Half Moon heads south along the East River and passes underneath the three major bridges (Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn), then cruises through New York harbor to the Statue of Liberty, which it circles for approximately thirty minutes. It then turns around and makes the same trip again in reverse over a three hour period. The experience of watching the bridges pass overhead while a great band is rocking twenty feet away is not to be missed!
