There Ain't No Cure

CHRISTINE OHLMAN
THE GLASS STATE

This queen of blue-eyed rock'n'soul, who grew up loving equally the sweetness of a Memphis horn line and the raunch of an electric guitar riff, whether played by Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, or Pop Staples, teased her blonde hair into a beehive in honor of Ronnie Spector and never looked back, picking up a guitar and forging a career as a songwriter in the process. She’s the current, long-time vocalist with the Saturday Night Live Band (SNL40’s anniversary post-show concert also featured her star turn onstage with Elvis Costello and the B-52s), whose latest CD The Deep End, was honored on five national Top Ten lists and features special guests/duet partners Ian Hunter, Dion DiMucci, and Marshall Crenshaw, plus Levon Helm, GE Smith, Andy York, Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, Catherine Russell, Big Al Anderson, and others. Ohlman topped the Alternate Root.com’s Readers’ Poll as top Americana vocalist, joining other winners Paul Thorn, The Mavericks and Rodney Crowell.

Gagging On The Edge Of Love

M.O.T.O.
THE BAMBOO KIDS • PERP WALK

"Masters Of The Obvious' (aka M.O.T.O.) sound is that of one would be a 100% appropriate heard searing over an AM station on a weather beaten drive-in theater speaker some place in the midwest that time forgot. A time when Kiss, The Four Tops, Sweet, Olivia Newton-John, Black Sabbath, Lou Rawls and Boston could be packed tightly next to each other across the tinny mono frequency. A couple of acres of customized vans, big block engines and paneled station wagons with teens inside clutching such bottles as Richard's Irish Rose or Sloe Gin and Mountain Dew inside. The humid summer air is snarled with the scent of snack bar grease and smoldering homegrown. The projectionist for 25 summers had seem films about surfing student council members, sadistic bikers, reckless auto thieves, cheerleaders possessed by the devil and magic Volkswagon's come an go. But the station they played through the speakers before the previews started at dusk always stayed the same. In his twenty sixth summer the Flavo shrimp rolls and the cheap whiskey finally caught up to him and stopped his heart. The guy that took his place declared that AM radio was for squares and little kids and started piping the Ramones through the speakers. All hell broke loose and M.O.T.O. is what was left standing in the ruins." -Smashing Transistors

Cut Me Down To Size

PETER LANCTOT & THE STRAY DOGS
FAMOUS GENIUSESEL SILVER CABS
THE JACK GRACE DUO

Pete Lanctot is a singer songwriter living in Brooklyn, NY. His songs are surreal and mysterious narratives often featuring sordid casts of characters who’s time, locations and origins are vague, and seem equally likely to be found in present day NYC, a Memphis juke joint of the '20s or hitchhiking a depression-era plains state highway. Musically, Pete’s songs carry on the American traditions of blues, folk and country music while avoiding reproduction and derivation, and embrace sonic experimentalism and the avant garde. Traditional blues and ballad forms are bent from their original shapes by untraditional playing techniques, droning accompaniments, and interactive free improvisation within the band. In a live setting, Pete accompanies his singing with a wide array of instruments including guitar, viola, violin, accordion and the haunting sounds of a strohviolin (a bowed string instrument where the sound is produced through a metal gramaphone-like horn). His band features a rotating cast of talented musicians and improvisers. Often utilizing very traditional blues, country and string band instrumentations (upright bass, drums, guitar, horns, banjo and pedal steel), the result is far from a polite Americana sound.

THE ELECTRIC MESS
THE CARVELS • KREBS & THE MAYNARD Gs
THE PHIL GAMMAGE QUINTET

"[The Electric Mess] have two excellent albums under their belt, both of which are filled with all the trappings of classic '60s punk — fuzz guitars, snotty vocals, and swirling organs abound — with a big slap of psychedelic coloring; think early Stones, Animals, 13th Floor Elevators, Seeds, Chocolate Watchband, and Lollipop Shoppe, as well as latter-day revivalists like The Chesterfield Kings, Cynics, Lyres, and The Miracle Workers." -Achilles In The Alleyway

Get To The Point

STEAK
EAMON DOWD

Steak is founding members Erik Lieblein on rhythm guitar/vocals, Jack Grace on lead guitar/vocals, Stu Damm on drums, and occasionally founding member TJ Thomas on bass with Larry Cook and Daniel Garcia also sharing the bass chair. Their first fans developed from the Boulder, Colorado music scene in 1992 which included bands like The Samples, Big Head Todd and The Monsters Leftover Salmon and many others. The band played a "sarcastic latin/funk with everything including the kitchen sink kinda style" (Colorado Daily) and quickly developed a Colorado/West Coast underground group of followers. The word on their 'silly yet clever in a refreshing manner" (SF Weekly) stage show kept spreading and Steak began traveling California with the magical cult band, The Beat Farmers for a stretch. The road continued with a diverse pedigree of bands that included NRBQ, Uncle Tupelo, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fishbone, The Funky Meters, Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste,  Steak got a tour bus and lived on the road for a few years, relocating to San Francisco and eventually basing themselves from Jack, Erik and Stu's birthplace of New York City. Steak is internationally renowned primarily for it's song, "Big Bear" which is featured in the climax of the Fox Searchlight comedy hit, Super Troopers (along with another Steak track, "Second To The Bottle").
