Punk Island Vs Porch Stomp

CASTLE BLACK • BEARS OF ALASKA • FORT VINE
BAD FACES • COLLIN COUVILLION • INROD

Punk Island (P.I.) is led by a collective of artists, curators, musicians, and educators whose goal is to bring the vitality, diversity, and intensity of the NYC punk scene into the light of day. We are a community of punks who love music, musicians and the fans, friends, and family that participate throughout the year to keep our culture true to the lives we want to live. We aim to support a philosophy of creativity, rebellion and work to feed those who are hungry for a world where passion is valued over profit. We promote a counter-culture through our collective, art, music, writing and events. Punk Island's efforts culminate annually as a free, all age's music festival on Governors Island, as a not for profit organization we are funded by Make Music New York, the collective and the community

Porch Stomp is a folk celebration unlike any other.  Set on the beautiful greenery of Governors Island, Porch Stomp invites over 60 bands, artists, or performing arts organizations to utilize the historic porches of Nolan Park as a pulpit for performance and education, highlighting artistry ranging from traditional folk to old-time, blues, roots, bluegrass and americana.  Now in its fourth year, Porch Stomp offers more unique performance and educational opportunities than ever before with increased performance locations, workshops, food and drink vending, there are a million ways to get involved with Porch Stomp as a performer, student or viewer.  This year there's no better way to spend a Saturday in June!

Freedom Sounds

THE ROCKSTEADY 7
Pay tribute to Tommy McCook
Plus: DJ Ursa Major (Legio SPQR)

Hot on the heels of the recent Roland Alphonso tribute night, The Rocksteady 7 return to Hank's for a tribute to the legendary Tommy McCook, a giant of Jamaican jazz. Tommy is most famous for his time with the Skatalites and is one of the inventors of the ska style. He also played with his group the Supersonics at the end of the ska-era through rocksteady and into reggae,  He also played on some crucial Aggrovators tracks in the mid 1970s... Let's just say the man had a a long and varied career! The band will play two sets of Tommy's music; a variety of his tunes that personally effected bandleader Dave Hillyard. You will hear songs both familiar and rare!

The Rocksteady 7 is an influential American ska and jazz band from NYC. Since the early '90s the group has consisted of tenor saxophonist and band leader David Hillyard (of Slackers fame) as well as percussionist Larry McDonald (Afro Jamaicans, Bob Marley, Taj Mahal, Gil-Scott Heron). In live performances, they are supported by a rotating cast of musicians, including drummer Eddie Ocampo and Dave Wake on keys among others. Given reggae's globally reaching influence, the Rocksteady 7 holds true to the genre's roots and the self-described "Jamaican Jazz" sound combines ska, rocksteady and reggae with extended jazz improvisation, intricate melodies, and complex harmonies. The group incorporates many diverse elements of world music with rocksteady rhythms, including ska, jazz, calypso, as well as early African and American jazz influences.

Vive La Révolution!

LES SANS CULOTTES
THE POXYLIFTS • BUNNY X

The "seven-headed beast from the hard-scrabble streets of Menilmontant" and "those frilly Parisian underthings," Les Sans Culottes borrowed their name from the ill-clad (i.e., long-trousered) citizen-soldiers of the French Revolution. The band's sound is a melange of Francophone '60s girl group and the Kinks... "We are the masters of the French rock'n'roll; all others are but the slave!"
