THE ELECTRIC MESS
THE CARVELS • KREBS & THE MAYNARD Gs
THE PHIL GAMMAGE QUINTET

"[The Electric Mess] have two excellent albums under their belt, both of which are filled with all the trappings of classic '60s punk — fuzz guitars, snotty vocals, and swirling organs abound — with a big slap of psychedelic coloring; think early Stones, Animals, 13th Floor Elevators, Seeds, Chocolate Watchband, and Lollipop Shoppe, as well as latter-day revivalists like The Chesterfield Kings, Cynics, Lyres, and The Miracle Workers." -Achilles In The Alleyway

Saturday, June 4th at Hank's Saloon
46 Third Avenue (at Atlantic), Brooklyn, U.S.A.
Doors at 8PM. $8 cover. 21+ with ID.

Get To The Point

STEAK
EAMON DOWD

Steak is founding members Erik Lieblein on rhythm guitar/vocals, Jack Grace on lead guitar/vocals, Stu Damm on drums, and occasionally founding member TJ Thomas on bass with Larry Cook and Daniel Garcia also sharing the bass chair. Their first fans developed from the Boulder, Colorado music scene in 1992 which included bands like The Samples, Big Head Todd and The Monsters Leftover Salmon and many others. The band played a "sarcastic latin/funk with everything including the kitchen sink kinda style" (Colorado Daily) and quickly developed a Colorado/West Coast underground group of followers. The word on their 'silly yet clever in a refreshing manner" (SF Weekly) stage show kept spreading and Steak began traveling California with the magical cult band, The Beat Farmers for a stretch. The road continued with a diverse pedigree of bands that included NRBQ, Uncle Tupelo, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fishbone, The Funky Meters, Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste,  Steak got a tour bus and lived on the road for a few years, relocating to San Francisco and eventually basing themselves from Jack, Erik and Stu's birthplace of New York City. Steak is internationally renowned primarily for it's song, "Big Bear" which is featured in the climax of the Fox Searchlight comedy hit, Super Troopers (along with another Steak track, "Second To The Bottle").

133 Years Of The Brooklyn Bridge

Urban Folk Art Gallery is gearing up for their yearly homage to the bridge with over 30 NY artists confirmed to participate (including Dead Flowers Productions very own Lee Greenfeld). A wide variety of artists from different mediums from photographers, painters, illustrators, comic book artists, printmakers, tattooers, to legendary graffiti artists, are slated to exhibit. "The city tends to celebrate this anniversary in increments of 25 years ( 75th, 100th, 125th), I have lived near the bridge all my life, it is a constant factor in my art, whether it be painting, tattooing, drawing or printmaking, so why not celebrate every year?” says curator and resident artist Adam Suerte. The Brooklyn Bridge was opened to the public on May 24th,1883.

Three years ago, when the gallery hosted the 130th anniversary, Suerte had just bought 25 gallons of surplus paint that the DOT was auctioning off to vacate a supply warehouse in DUMBO. He had every artist use that paint in their pieces that year. That won’t be a requirement this year, but there are still five gallons left that Suerte has repackaged and will be on sale at the gallery.

Opening reception - Friday, May 20th at 7PM
Urban Folk Art® Studios, 101 Smith Street, Brooklyn U.S.A.

    Show runs until June 20th.
Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 12-9PM and Sundays, 1-8PM

    GALAPAGOS NOW!
PYRAMIDS • PROUDEST EVER • SEVENS

On and off the radar of Brooklyn’s underground since 2007, Galapagos Now! has carved a niche for itself as a group "of truly independent mind, and a totally individual sound," if the hype is to be believed. Galapagos Now! is a power trio that revolves around the collaboration between Joe Dairy and Mark Gurarie. Dairy (aka Jeff Waite), whose eight solo records are a testament to his prolific work as a kind of anti-Americana singer-songwriter, adds a croon or howl to the proceedings, whereas Gurarie sings "ugly," as he likes to put it, while holding down the bass. Elder Merchant, Brooklyn native and former drummer for Gözer, keeps the group in straight time while handling the band’s foreign relations. The band has toured the Midwest and South of the United States, as well as Europe.

DAVE HILLYARD & THE ROCKSTEADY 7

The Rocksteady 7 is an influential American ska and jazz band from NYC. Since the early '90s the group has consisted of tenor saxophonist and band leader David Hillyard (of Slackers fame) as well as percussionist Larry McDonald (Afro Jamaicans, Bob Marley, Taj Mahal, Gil-Scott Heron). In live performances, they are supported by a rotating cast of musicians, including drummer Eddie Ocampo and Dave Wake on keys among others. Given reggae's globally reaching influence, the Rocksteady 7 holds true to the genre's roots and the self-described "Jamaican Jazz" sound combines ska, rocksteady and reggae with extended jazz improvisation, intricate melodies, and complex harmonies. The group incorporates many diverse elements of world music with rocksteady rhythms, including ska, jazz, calypso, as well as early African and American jazz influences.

WIDE RIGHT • LEAGUE OF PITY
PILOT KINGS • STAR MODEL B

"Wide Right’s lead singer Leah Archibald could be the daughter of Heart’s Ann Wilson. She has a similar timbre to Wilson during her “Barracuda” period, and a similar penchant for hard-bitten hard rock, lady-style... Archibald sings about the working class life in her hometown of Buffalo, NY, as well as being a single mother, struggling to pay bills, and flattened peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches. The sometimes-downtrodden lyrics could come off as attempting to elicit pity, but Archibald’s style is so matter-of-fact and often funny that the listener wouldn’t dare feel sorry for her." -Spin

    Drinking Songs For Lovers

    THE JACK GRACE BAND

“The man slings more than a few sparks from his big,
hollow-body Gibson... what sets his songs apart from the rest of the
country or alt-country scene is his laugh-out-loud, absurdist wit.”

Jack’s form of experimental country art rock has been compared to everything from Frank Zappa to early Johnny Cash. Five album releases and tracks featured in the films Super Troopers and Beer Fest have earned Jack a growing following and a steady hum of praise. His most recent release, Drinking Songs For Lovers, features some fine country numbers, but he added mariachi horns to give them a Latin flavor, inspired by his yearly pilgrimage to Tulum, Mexico, where he likes to write songs on the beach.
