ANDI RAE & THE BACK RIVER BULLIES
ALICE & THE UNDERGROUND • SCOTT STEIN

"[Andi Rae's] vocals are at once potent, powerful, fragile, beckoning, vulnerable yet guarded. She writes like someone who has tasted her share of life; has been hurt; has been exhilarated; has found and lost her faith. There is a dare in this music... -BuddyHollywood

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Andi Rae Healy has been a mainstay on New York City’s indie-country scene for nearly a decade. Her debut album, I Guess I Am A Sinner — featuring contributions from artists as diverse as pop princess, Cyndi Lauper and indie darling, Jill Sobule — was released in 2006 and earned rave reviews for its deep melodicism, lush production, and its brutally honest and painfully heartfelt lyrics.

THE ROCKSTEADY 7
with special guest SEAN WHEELER

Plus: DJ 100dBS

Record release party for The Giver, the fifth album from David Hillyard & The Rocksteady 7. Tonight will also sadly be the final show for the band at Hank's Saloon.

The Rocksteady 7 is an influential American ska and jazz band from NYC. Since the early '90s the group has consisted of tenor saxophonist and band leader David Hillyard (The Slackers) as well as percussionist Larry McDonald. In live performances, they are supported by a rotating cast of musicians, including drummer Eddie Ocampo and Dave Wake on keys among others. Given reggae's globally reaching influence, the Rocksteady 7 holds true to the genre's roots and the self-described "Jamaican Jazz" sound combines ska, rocksteady and reggae with extended jazz improvisation, intricate melodies, and complex harmonies. The group incorporates many diverse elements of world music with rocksteady rhythms, including ska, jazz, calypso, as well as early African and American jazz influences.

Stephen Friedland (aka Brute Force) was first attracted to performing when he was only eight years old, influenced by his mother, who was an actress in several plays at the Jersey City Jewish Community Center Theater. In the early 1960s he met Billy Gussak and began working together with the veteran studio drummer. One song he worked on with Gussak, "My Teenage Castle" ended up on the B-side of the 1963 Peggy March single, "I Wish I Were a Princess." After achieving success at RCA he began to play guitar and keyboards for the Tokens. During that time he wrote songs for Del Shannon, the Creation, the Cyrcle, and the Chiffons. The Chiffons had a minor hit with "Nobody Knows What's Goin' on in My Mind But Me." In 1967 he left the Tokens and entered the next phase of his musical career.

He wrote and recorded the LP I, Brute Force – Confections Of Love for Columbia Records in 1967. One song on the album, "No Olympian Height", was covered by Paul Levinson's trio The Other Voices (produced by Ellie Greenwich and Mike Rashkow) and released on Atlantic Records in 1968. He also recorded and released the album Extemporaneous on BT Puppy Records in 1970. Original copies of this album are scarce and it is now a very collectible disc.

Brute Force may be best known for a song that barely saw a release. Written by Friedland and produced by The Tokens, "The King of Fuh" referred repeatedly to the 'King of the Land of Fuh.' John Lennon admired the record; so did George Harrison, who acquired the track and overdubbed eleven strings of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, arranged by John Barham. It soon became obvious that neither EMI nor Capitol Records would distribute the single, so Apple Records pressed and distributed 1,000 copies in 1969. After the initial Apple pressing (and no radio play), Friedland teamed up with Jeff Cheen and issued the tune on his own Brute Force Records label (b/w "Tapeworm Of Love"). In 2005, the Revola label issued both "King of Fuh" and its original B side ("Nobody Knows") as bonus tracks on the CD reissue of the BT Puppy Records compilation Extemporaneous.  Finally, in 2010 (over four decades after Capitol and EMI rejected it), "The King of Fuh" was again released by Apple, on the compilation Come And Get It: The Best of Apple Records.

Summer Is Over

Cash Registers play raw, melodic punk. The band wears their Ramones and Buzzcocks influences on their sleeve, with the early hardcore of Black Flag, Dead Kennedys and Circle Jerks thrown in the mix.  Cash Registers mastermind John Bendik began his musical life in Pittsburgh hardcore scene. John’s bands had a brief existence, but left a lasting impression on the scene.  After relocating to New York City in the '90s, John moved to the front of the stage to sing and play guitar for his new band, Cash Registers.

Cash Registers played hundreds of live shows and released two highly-praised EPs and comp tracks for Flipside, Go-Kart, Intensive Scare and more. After almost 10 years of raging in the clubs in New York City and the East Coast, John folded the band and took a break. Itching to get back to music, John started sorting through his tapes and CDs. He found 20+ unreleased Cash Register songs, which he remixed and remastered for the full-length album Context Demos released on Million Dollar Records. The album picked up great reviews and John formed a new version of the  Cash Registers, with old friends Mark Zadroga and Rick Melara for live shows.  The band made their live debut in June 2014 and continue tearing up stages in and around New York City to this day.

Seasons

Gramercy Arms is a revolving NYC-based collective of musicians and artists. Masterminded by main songwriter/producer Dave Derby (Dambuilders/Lloyd Cole) the group is released its second full-length record, The Seasons of Love on UK label Reveal Records this summer.

Expanding from the sunny, unapologetically pop approach of the debut, The Seasons Of Love widens the musical palette as well as the range of collaboration by featuring Lloyd Cole, Joan Wasser, Tanya Donnely, Matthew Caws, Kendall Meade, Claudia Gonson, Doug Gillard, Erin Moran, Joan As Police Woman, Renee Lo Bue, Ray Ketchem, Verena Wiesendanger, Gedeon Luke and others. The album was recorded by Derby and Ketchem, mixed by acclaimed engineer Thom Monahan and mastered by Eric Broyhill.

Eternally inspired by the artistic heyday of '70s and '80s-era New York City, Gramercy Arms makes crisp, multi-layered pop music that elicits authentic emotion. Wistful, joyous, contemplative, cool and triumphant— depending on the track you land on, The Seasons Of Love might make you feel it all.

    Wild Unknown

Ruby Rae’s debut release title Double Feature could easily be mistaken for a night at the local drive-in when rock'n'roll still flirted with its honky-tonk roots. Her songs "It Came from the Swamp" and "Invisible Man" showcase country inflected instrumentation paired with heartfelt and sinister stories of guns, love, and loneliness. Backed by a full band on her second EP The Outskirts, Ruby Rae's explores the outsider element of a small American town.

Who among us wasn’t moved to tears, to frustration, to confusion, to bewilderment, to some other extreme feeling when we discovered that our government was separating children from their parents at the border; parents who were looking for a better place to raise their kids — just as our ancestors did however many years ago? Many of us in the New York City DJ community wondered what we could do to help, even if in some small, symbolic way. Our friend Anna Anabolic came up with a great idea: Spin To Win!

Here’s the deal. A bunch of your favorite club DJs will spin records. Attendees will win prizes. Money generated from this will go to the ACLU (which is helping immigrant parents get their kids back) and Make The Road New York (which helps immigrants locally here in New York City).

A bunch of prizes have been donated and there will be raffles throughout the night. DJs spin. You win. Together we can help people who need help... and do the shing-a-ling while we do it!

Birth Of The Cool is a brand new acoustic jazz group based in Brooklyn, New York, which lovingly re-imagines the music of legendary trumpet player Miles Davis from the 1940s and 1950s. This incredibly fertile era of Miles Davis’ music spans rhythm and blues, the invention of bebop, the creation of cool jazz, and the development of hard bop, as well as the inception of modal jazz music.

Birth Of The Cool features a combination of veteran NYC-based musicians, as well as new faces on the scene, including trumpet player and producer Jeremy Mush1, drummer Luis Zuluaga, pianist Harold Weg, baritone saxophonist Patrick Laslie, and tenor saxophonist Andrew Schwandt.
