Dont Make Me Break You Down

ERIC AMBEL
KASEY ANDERSON • CLIFF WESTFALL

Eric Ambel is a roots-rock renaissance man who has worked as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer with the likes of Nils Lofgren, Mojo Nixon, Freedy Johnston and Mary Lee's Corvette, as well as an original member of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, The Del-Lords and The Yayhoos. Ambel — known to friends, associates and bandmates as Roscoe — is the possessor of an estimable musical resume that’s established his credentials as a deeply committed rocker as well as a witty and thoughtful songwriter. Between his current duties as producer, bandleader, studio proprietor, bar owner, member of uber-bar-band supergroup the Yayhoos and lead guitarist of Steve Earle’s band The Dukes, he’s found time to launch his own label, Lakeside Lounge Records, to redress the longstanding absence of Ambel solo product from the marketplace.

Hold That Tiger

"The throwback honkytonk tunes of Ruby Rae [are] darker than your usual singer-songwriter fare, with noir-ish and Southern gothic influenced lyrics." –Washington Post

Ruby Rae’s debut release title Double Feature could easily be mistaken for a night at the local drive-in when rock'n'roll still flirted with its honky-tonk roots. Her songs "It Came from the Swamp" and "Invisible Man" showcase country inflected instrumentation paired with heartfelt and sinister stories of guns, love, and loneliness. Backed by a full band on her second EP The Outskirts, Ruby Rae's explores the outsider element of a small American town.

Lonely For You

Photo:

“The duo manages to make the now familiar line-up of guitar and drums sound urgent again, and they spit out both gritty, saturated blue-rock and airy, almost Spector-esque pop with a quiet strength.”

Mr. Airplane Man is Margaret on guitar and Tara on drums. Their sound is a mishmash of Mississippi hill country blues, Memphis weirdo rock'n'roll, drony VU and Stooges, and Boston garage-beat and pop wonderment. The band started in the late '90s. Almost immediately, they joined Morphine for a US tour and recorded a self-titled EP with Mark Sandman of Morphine. They went on to tour the US extensively, playing with The Reigning Sound, White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, Holly GoLightly, Hot Snakes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blues Explosion, Dirtbombs and many more.

During the '90s and '00s, Mr. Airplane Man released three albums and an EP on Sympathy for the Record Industry. They successfully toured Europe and played two Peel Sessions on John Peel’s BBC radio show. Now Mr. Airplane Man is happy to be playing and recording again, after taking a break to have babies, live in the desert, and generally shake up their lives.

Second To The Bottle

STEAK
REBEL HARMONIX

Steak is founding members Erik Lieblein on rhythm guitar/vocals, Jack Grace on lead guitar/vocals, Stu Damm on drums, and occasionally founding member TJ Thomas on bass with Larry Cook and Daniel Garcia also sharing the bass chair. Their first fans developed from the Boulder, Colorado music scene in 1992 which included bands like The Samples, Big Head Todd and The Monsters Leftover Salmon and many others. The band played a "sarcastic latin/funk with everything including the kitchen sink kinda style" (Colorado Daily) and quickly developed a Colorado/West Coast underground group of followers. The word on their 'silly yet clever in a refreshing manner" (SF Weekly) stage show kept spreading and Steak began traveling California with the magical cult band, The Beat Farmers for a stretch. The road continued with a diverse pedigree of bands that included NRBQ, Uncle Tupelo, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fishbone, The Funky Meters, Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste,  Steak got a tour bus and lived on the road for a few years, relocating to San Francisco and eventually basing themselves from Jack, Erik and Stu's birthplace of New York City. Steak is internationally renowned primarily for it's song, "Big Bear" which is featured in the climax of the Fox Searchlight comedy hit, Super Troopers (along with another Steak track, "Second To The Bottle").
